Who is it for?
The day is intended for parents wanting to learn about unschooling and how to do it well. There will be time for informal chats with Sandra, Joyce and with each other.
The talks will all be in English, but there will be red cards available during registration that you can hold onto and raise if you need translation help. We are not organizing an official translator, but trust that there will be enough bilingual people in the room for occasional translation help from English to Dutch.
We are not organising activities for any children who come along. There is a lot to do and see in Leiden, so it might be more fun for children to go off exploring with whomever is looking after them.
However we do understand that some people may need to bring children and may want them to be in the same place.
For younger children we have hired a classroom in the school where children can play or relax. There is also a little playground in the school yard and a big playground right across the road. The room and the playgrounds are not supervised by the conference organisers. Therefore a parent, or other carer, must be with their children at all times.
We ask parents to ensure children in the classroom or little playground are playing relatively quiet games so as not to distract the participants or speaker during the talks or informal chats.
How much does it cost?
Tickets are now available for €35.
Tickets bought on the day of the symposium will be €40.
There is an increase in price from last year’s event because we need to cover the costs for an additional international speaker and because we need to rent a larger space since we sold out in 2012.
How is the day being funded?
Sandra Dodd and Joyce Fetteroll are not charging us a fee to deliver the talks. They are generously giving their time so that parents attending can benefit from their knowledge and experience. We will simply reimburse them for their out of pocket expenses, the venue hire and any associated costs. Thank you very much :-)
My husband and I are volunteering our time to organize the day. Ticket costs have been set at a level that the event will not make a profit. If more tickets sell than expected, we will donate the profit to future ALL Unschooling Symposium events that Sandra Dodd organizes in Albuquerque.
We ask everyone bring something to contribute towards a potluck lunch and we all share. Of course you are welcome to opt out and bring your own lunch or go for lunch elsewhere. There are many restaurants and cafes in the center of Leiden, which is about a 20 minute walk from the school. Children are welcome to join us for the potluck lunch.
If you are coming with children, please bring a little extra contribution towards the potluck.
Who is organising it?
My name is Rippy Dusseldorp and my husband, Graham, and I are organising the day. We have two children, ages 8 and 6, that are happy to be unschooling. Both my husband and I have been inspired by the writing of Sandra Dodd and Joyce Fetteroll and we wanted to invite them to Leiden so that others could be inspired as well.
Last Year’s Event
Leiden is too far away …
Sandra will be speaking in several locations in Europe in the summer of 2013, including Portugal, Scotland, England and probably Scotland. Maybe one of these locations will be better suited. For my family, unschooling really started to blossom after I attended the London Unschooling Conference in 2009 and was inspired by Sandra’s talk. I encourage interested unschoolers to find an event near you and attend, if at all possible.
